Posting in Islamic Art at the British Museum

The Department of the Middle East covers the ancient and contemporary civilisations and cultures of the Middle East from the Neolithic period until the present. We are currently recruiting for the post of Curator (Islamic) to curate the collections from the eastern part of the Islamic world, including Persian and Mughal miniature paintings and modern/ contemporary art. Specifically this will involve : assisting in the administration, curatorship and development of the department’s collections from the eastern Islamic world in conjunction with the departmental plan ; partaking in the departmental loans programme when Islamic objects are involved ; inspecting relevant galleries daily and ; answering queries about Islamic objects from both scholars and the public.
Educated to postgraduate degree level with a qualification in Islamic art and/or archaeology (or equivalent), you will have experience of handling artefacts from the region. It is essential that you also have the ability to read and speak Persian and or Arabic. You will be a good communicator to a range of audiences, and have the ability to liaise effectively with fellow curators and the Museum Assistant team. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office is essential. It is desirable that you have a publication record in either Islamic art, archaeology or history. Advertised internally and externally
